Morton Girls are all set to make history by introducing the first ever senior ladies team to compete under the Greenock Morton banner as of the upcoming 2017 season.
The girls section already has teams at under-9s, under-10s, under-12s, under-13s, under-15s and under-17s – but we are now in the final stages of completing the pathway envisioned when our female footballing structure was put in place.
To achieve this we recently held trials to select players for a brand new first-team. These were carried out over the space of a fortnight, with 26 players attending over two sessions in which they took part in small-sided games in the first week and then a full 11-a-side game in the second week.
The first-team coaching staff and a number of experienced coaches were drafted in to help and observed the talent from the side of the park. Now the hard job begins in selecting players to come into an already strong squad to push on challenge in the Second Division next season.
GMCT Chief Executive, Warren Hawke, said: “Since the inception of Morton Girls over two years ago, it had been a long-term strategy to start a senior team to compete in the national pyramid structure. We have based our first ladies team on graduates from our Morton Girls pathway, and this shows planning and development and provides a core foundation for the future and a basis for continued success.”
Laura Williamson, Women and Girls Development Officer, added: “With a number of our Under-17s moving up to the first-team, I am also looking to add experience in there to help guide the team through their maiden campaign. I am really excited for the coming season and what the future holds.”
