Inverclyde October

During the October school holiday week, Greenock Morton Community Trust delivered holiday football camps in partnership with SFA and Active Schools for children aged 4 – 15 years.  Camps took place at Inverclyde Academy and in Wemyss Bay, with children attending either half day camps in the morning/afternoon or a full day camp which ran from 10 – 3pm.

The response to these camps was outstanding and Tom Elliott, Community Engagement Manager, was once again blown away by the numbers of children who signed up to join GMCT at the two venues.  Elliott said, “after the success of our summer camps we knew that there was a demand for the camps.  We began planning the October camps as soon as we finished up in the summer and l was delighted with the numbers of kids who attended.  Not only did we have our community coaches delivery fun sessions at the camps but we were working in partnership with Street League Inverclyde.”

During the week at both venues, youths from Street League joined GMCT where they assisted and gained experience in the delivery of coaching sessions which are headed up by Tom Elliott.  Elliott commented that, “the kids were great during the camps and l thank them for coming along.  It’s a great experience for them to see first hand not only the delivery of sessions but all the preparation that goes on leading up to the camps.”

GMCT were also lucky to have YourRadioFM drop into the camps when they interviewed a couple of the community coaches and some of the kids who were taking part.

Partnership

Inverclyde’s Education & Communities Vice Convener, Councillor James McColgan, said: “It is great to see such a high level of participation of sporting activities over the October week holiday. Camps like these offer children the chance to get involved in fun team sports such as football in their local communities which can boost their health and social skills.”

Thanks to everyone who joined GMCT during the October week and a special thank you to the Morton FC players who once again took time to visit the kids at both venues where they were inundated with requests for photos and autographs.

Thank you
