MORTON Easter Holiday Camps kick off in just under a month – giving kids the ideal opportunity to spend their school break having fun and playing football. The camps, run by the Greenock Morton Community Trust, are open to children between 2-15 years old and will be held throughout Inverclyde.
They run across two weeks and groups will be broken up into 2-4 year olds and 5-15 year olds. Week 1 runs from Monday 7th April – Friday 11th April and Week 2 from Monday 14th April – Friday 18th April. The 2-4 year olds group will train in 45 minute sessions at Inverclyde Academy and Port Glasgow Campus, while the 5-15 year olds have the option to stay for either two hours or full day sessions at Inverclyde Academy, Port Glasgow Campus and Wemyss Bay Primary School.
Morton Manager Kenny Shiels was enthusiastic about the initiative. He said: “It’s brilliant for the connection between the club and the community – and really good for the kids. Exercise is a great thing for young people. They get a lot from it and it helps develop them steadily.”
That is a sentiment our Community Engagement Manager, Tom Elliott, agrees with. Tom said: “Following the success of previous camps we are all set for this year. We’re taking them out to different areas and we are launching a pre-school course as well. We’re going to have a really good Easter.”
During the camps, children will benefit from structured coaching sessions directed by SFA qualified instructors, undertake fun challenges, collect a completion certificate and have the chance to meet Kenny and selected players.
Current club captain Dougie Imrie also stressed the importance of running programmes such as the Easter training camps. He said: “It’s good for future Morton stars and to get children started early with football to keep them active. It’s also a great initiative to hopefully get kids saying to their mums and dads that they want to go and see Morton play.”
Everyone who takes part will also receive a free match ticket for the Morton v Dundee match on 19th April and be entered into the half-time draw during that game, with the prize the chance to play on the famous Cappielow pitch!
