Morton in the Community Reports Busy and Successful November - Claire Lindsay

11/12/2024

The community initiative, which is linked to Greenock Morton FC, highlighted its packed schedule in its latest newsletter.

The month saw a successful conclusion of the McDonald's Fun Football block, wrapping up with a festival in partnership with the Scottish FA and Active Schools Inverclyde, attended by 40 footballers.

The community initiative is now gearing up for the new year, looking forward to seeing current interns take on leadership roles in various projects.

Volunteers are also being sought for ongoing and upcoming initiatives.

A highlight of the month was the 18 unique projects delivered in October, with over 160 female participants involved.

The initiative also saw 83 extra time participants.

There were also individual highlights from the coaches.

Apprentice coach Aidan said: "The highlight of November for me is getting the Full STEM Ahead Club started.

"It has been great to see the number of participants coming along and enjoying the programme."

Nathan, another apprentice coach, said: "My personal highlight of November was being able to take the lead in our Football Memories project.

"This allowed me to be given some responsibility and learn some new skills."

Jen, a community coach, said: "A real highlight this month was when Janice and Hannah, from Inverclyde Athletics Club, came along to our Extra Time session and delivered a fantastic taster session for our kids.

"The energy and passion they both brought was truly infectious, and it was clear that the children were completely engaged and excited throughout."

The Girls U12s Blue team was congratulated on completing their 2024 season, having come a long way since their fresh start in January.

Darrin, head coach, said: "The progress and development that the girls have made over these past 10 months together has been phenomenal.

They are a credit to themselves and to Morton in the Community and should be extremely proud of their efforts."

The community initiative also saw the introduction of a new STEM club as part of its More Than Football project, attended by 13 individual participants.

This will continue next year along with potential new activities.

Football Memories sessions saw increasing attendance, with a surprise visit from Cappie, the club's mascot.

The Football Champions programme, which teaches over 30 kids about health and wellbeing, confident speaking, creativity, and physical activity, is entering its final weeks at St Francis, St Michaels, and Newark.

The community initiative is also on the lookout for a new coach to join the Under 8's Girls Team.
